Digital transformation: An infinite game that you don't play with a finite mindset

Digital transformation isn’t merely about implementing new technologies. It’s a holistic process that also impacts people, organizational structures and corporate culture.

Technology is only the beginning

Digital transformation isn’t merely about implementing new technologies. It’s a holistic process that also impacts people, organizational structures and corporate culture.

In today's increasingly fast-changing digital world, it is important that organisations can organise themselves in an agile way to maximise the use of collective wisdom to meet challenges.

It’s about being able to adapt quickly by paying attention to all talents and skills in the organisation. Putting the collective first, having clear goals and therefore having clear what everyone's contribution can be to those goals.

You can think of it as a swarm constantly adjusting to the wind. And that is a very different form than the one we have used in the past to set up our organisations.

This actually requires us to put the steering wheel in the hands of the collective and let them adjust at every level. We have to setup the necessary feedback loops within a clear yet changing (and thus agile) governance structure. Different and new ways of working that give us structure, transparency and speed at the same time become necessary.

This also requires creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, guts, courage and perseverance.

The organization for a digital age

An organization and corporate culture that successfully supports (digital) transformation is often characterized by a few key traits:

  • Be Prepared to face challenges: Digitally transforming a company may require trying out new technologies and strategies that haven't been used before, which carries inherent risks. An organizational culture that tolerates well-calculated risks and learns from failures can significantly bolster the digital transformation process.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility: Cultures that are open to change and able to adapt to new situations are more likely to succeed in digital transformation. The technological landscape is constantly changing, so the ability to keep up with these changes and adjust strategies and methods accordingly is key. There’s no such thing as a straight path. The path will be wobbly and messy, so perseverance is needed to rise the challenge.
  • Innovation and Creativity: Digital transformation often requires novel approaches and solutions to problems. Cultures that value and encourage innovation and creativity are more likely to succeed.
  • Continuous Learning and Development: With the rapid pace of digital technology, there's always something new to learn. Cultures that promote continuous learning and development, where employees are encouraged and given opportunities to acquire new skills, are more likely to thrive in digital transformation.
  • Shared Leadership: Digital transformation often requires different parts of an organization to work together in new ways. Cultures that promote open communication and collaboration across teams and departments can help ensure everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals. Hearing everyone and using all the knowledge and wisdom is the road to success. In short, shared leadership. Leaders should be role models in embracing change and should empower their teams to do the same.
  • People Centricity: In the end, it's all about the people using the new tools. It is they who will use them and create value with them. They will have to iteratively give meaning to what this transformation should contribute to. So you have to enable them to make gradual adjustments to this. That is an ongoing process in which it must be possible for everyone to take ownership of the long-term outcome. It's an infinite game that you don't play with an finite mindset!

The journey ahead

Does your organization fit the above picture? Or does it seem scary?

These cultural aspects don't occur overnight and will require a concerted effort and commitment across the organization to be instilled and maintained.

Next to that, keep in mind that digital transformation is not a destination but a journey, which requires continuous learning and adapting in response to the rapidly changing digital landscape.
